Online Social Networking Goes Niche

MySpace, Friendster, and Facebook have spawned a new generation of social networking sites that deliver everything from video to virtual avatars, over any device and network. Leveraging next-generation technologies, including location-based services, and focusing on niche markets, the new breed of social networking players is ever-evolving and rapidly growing. For media companies looking to add their own twist to the social networking movement, it’s not about the size of your network, but the quality of your audience.

Thumb Culture

December 26th, 2005

During the holiday season, I’ve been reading an advance copy of a great book called Thumb Culture

The book was edited by a friend, Stefan Bertschi, and is a trailblazing selection of pieces on the mobile phone as a social tool. It’s been providing new insight on the landscape within which Socialight exists. I think it’s either available now or will be soon. If I get around to it, I’m going to write up a more detailed review once I’m done reading it.

I had written a chapter for the book, titled “Socialight: Mobile Network, Meet Social Network” that didn’t get into the book since it’s now focused on ethnographic and social research case studies.

However, I still highly recommend the book to anyone to whom this sounds interesting. You can purchase it here.

And if you’d like to read the unpublished chapter, you can find it here.

Kevin and Simon to speak at Location-Based Games Con.

April 14th, 2005

Kamida’s colleagues Kevin Slavin (Area/Code) and Simon Woodside (semacode.org) made a last-minute decision to fly to Barcelona for the Mobile Multiplayer, 3D and Location-Based Games conference now going on there. And now it turns out that they received an even more last-minute invitation to speak at the conference tomorrow (Friday) about Big Games. Wish I could be there…

Mark Cuban to fund MGM vs. Grokster

March 27th, 2005

I think the people of the US may owe Mark Cuban a big thank-you for putting himself in the line of fire like this, for such a good cause.

…the EFF and others came to me and asked if I would finance the legal effort against MGM. I said yes. I would provide them the money they need. So now the truth has been told. This isnt the big content companies against the technology companies. This is the big content companies, against me. Mark Cuban and my little content company. Its about our ability to use future innovations to compete vs their ability to use the courts to shut down our ability to compete. its that simple.
